Anti-apartheid activist, priest and politician, and sportsman. Leading member of the United Democratic Front (UDF). He served a three-year jail sentence for assisting ANC combatants. He was elected to the National Assembly in 1994 and became the ANC’s chief whip. From 1997 to 2004 he was premier of the Eastern Cape and then minister of sport and recreation until 2010.
