He defended many anti-apartheid activists and liberation movement members in trials and played a leading role in challenges to the government's administrative and executive decrees. He co-chaired the Conference for a Democratic South Africa (Codesa).He was appointed to the Constitutional Court in 1994 and served as Chief Justice from 1998 to 2000.
