The Presidential Years

Madiba is wearing an ANC cap and an Mbeki t-shirt

Stands on a balcony where below, in an amphitheatre, there is a cheering crowd of people.

Viva Nelson Mandela Viva! Viva ANC Viva!

Above a banner with Thabo’s face and reading ‘Together Fighting for Change. A better life for all. Vote ANC’ he addresses them: [he switches to isiXhosa from time to time but the message is essentially the same as his statements in English]

Whites have been in this country for more than 350 years. But there is no government which has ever delivered the services which my government has delivered over these five years. [APPLAUSE AND CHEERS] We have brought our people, every one of you, human dignity.

We have brought peace to this country. [CHEERS] Three million of our people have got clean, healthy tap water [APPLAUSE and CHEERS] in their houses. We have built 750 000 houses on land that is yours, belongs to you. And we have 1,5 million children at school today. [CHEERS]. Children below age of six years and pregnant mothers get free medical attention. [CHEERS] Five hundred new clinics and we have upgraded 1 000 clinics, new clinics. [CHEERS]. A farmer would employ a young man who is strong, to work on his farm and when he is old and he cannot work, they say, ‘I want you to leave my farm with your children’ and the person asks, ‘where am I going to go?’ and the farmer says, ‘that’s not my business’. [CHEERS][Various on crime in isiXhosa] There are people who say I have contradicted President Mbeki are telling a blue lie. There are also reports that we were give, got millions from Colonel Gadaffi of Libya. I wish he had given us millions. I would have taken those millions but it’s not true. For these elections Gadaffi has not given us money and if he had given us money I would have been happy because I’m not worried about Micky Mouse parties. [CHEERS] I’m not worried. When we were fighting for our liberation they never helped us. Now we are free because we have been helped by our friends, like Gadaffi, like Castro, like Iran, and many countries throughout, now they say we must do away with those who helped us. It is because these minority parties have no morality. That’s why they are saying so. If they were asked they would receive money from people and once they become free they say, ‘We don’t want you at all’. That is what they would have done. We will not do that. Our friends, when we were alone, are our friends now that we are free. On the second of June I want you to go out and vote in your numbers, in your multitudes. And vote for?

CROWD: ANC!

No I can’t hear you. And vote for?
